The New Century Hymnal was compiled by a committee at the request of the
General Synod of the UCC (United Church of Christ). It was completed in 1994
after 5 years of work. This service can be used to dedicate the New Century
Hymnal in worship. The main features of the Hymnal are:
A strong commitment to ancient tradition restoring many hymn texts of the
early centuries of the church
The inclusion of new hymns which have been produced over the past few
decades as well as those used in the ecumenical church
A broadening of the cultural diversity which is representative of the
church
An update of the language used in the hymns
The restoration of psalms for worship which can be sung
A conscious effort to include more hymns by women
A focus on the traditional orders of worship
The integration of the ecumenical three-year common lectionary cycle
The expansion of hymns for celebration of liturgical seasons
This worship service celebrates the commonalities between the Christian
religion and Native American traditions and religions. The aim is to
celebrate the many faces of God.
"How God Sees Us" uses Native American hymns,
creation stories, and readings to demonstrate how we are all connected.
